This is a second-year university project whereby we needed to create a piece of design to communicate to locals that dredging isn't always the best flood management strategy. For this project I needed to provide 3 deliverables: children’s book, poster and an adult flood guide. My aim to was create a package that could be delivered to houses and handed out at schools. I formed and illustrated a children's book using children as my target audience, this is to educate and allow for greater understanding at a young age to discourage incorrect opinions. This project was supported by the Environment Agency by providing feedback on the storyline and checking the accuracy of my deliverables.
I began by doing research into children's current understanding of flooding and the loss of tangible goods is one of the main impacts. Therefore, to provide a tangible good with this communication can assist recovery from a flood and restore a collection of possessions.
The adult flood guide provides an opportunity for parents to be proactive about flooding and fill in emergency details in preparation for a flood event. This guide again uses the same illustrations making it an aesthetically pleasing document the can be displayed on the fridge.
The poster is a representation of the research Sam gathered in the book to help the reader to become more involved in the content and the messages that are delivered. These were created on an A1 format. The poster features illustrations from the book and provides details about flood management in its simplest terms.
The outcome of this project let to me gaining experience within the Environment Agency and led to me completing freelance work for a number of their projects.
